Three hours later, Magee could have gladly strangled Tina Johnston. She’d pretended to ask “Tina-Jo” to stay the night as a way to provide Justin’s ex-girlfriend with the chance to have that talk she’d said she wanted.

Talk.

In private.

Magee certainly hadn’t conceived of the arrangement as a green light for Tina to drape herself over Justin every other second—in front of the Willoughbys.

Yet that was how most of the evening had unfolded.

Following the near-disaster of the introductions, Tina had retrieved her purse and accompanied Justin down the road to get her car and suitcase. He’d ensconced her in the bunk room, where she’d “settled in” while Magee and Kate had prepared a salad and the men had grilled steaks.

“Tina-Jo” reappeared moments before dinner was served. To Tina’s credit, she’d played her part well enough during the meal, probably because Justin paid her extra attention as their unexpected guest. After clean-up, the group reassembled on the sundeck for drinks. Unfortunately, within minutes, “Tina-Jo’s” acting nosedived.

Magee blamed the red wine the woman knocked back like a rusty old car guzzled oil. Or maybe the shiraz provided Tina a convenient excuse.

Now, Magee and Justin sat in lawn chairs while Tina hogged the director’s chair she’d wedged between them. The Willoughbys reclined in twin loungers across from Tina, chuckling and commenting while Justin regaled the group with tales of his mountain biking escapades. Only “Tina-Jo” deemed it necessary to fawn over each sentence, giggling when the story didn’t warrant it and thrusting her breasts in Justin’s face as she pawed him.

“Justin, that’s so funny!” she gushed before he’d finished recounting his latest adventure. Stroking his muscular biceps, she crossed and uncrossed her legs. The movements hitched up her painted-on white dress, exposing her toned upper thighs.

Justin shifted his arm, but Tina’s hand remained glued to it. Nate surveyed Tina’s behavior from the corner of one eye. A moment later, he slid a raised-eyebrows glance to his wife. Kate, the picture of English propriety for once, drummed a fingertip on her chin and hastily looked away.

Magee tightened her grip on her glass of pear cider. How she’d love to toss the contents on Tina and watch the Wicked Witch of Whistler melt away. If Tina’s obvious efforts to gain Justin’s attention stirred the Willoughbys’ suspicions about this weekend, she’d—she’d—

Frick, she didn’t know what she would do, but she could guarantee the outcome wouldn’t be pretty.

At the least, she couldn’t continue sitting here in faked ignorance while Tina auditioned for a one-woman reality show and the Willoughbys’ imaginations ran rampant. If Magee fabricated her own cycling exploits, maybe she’d shift the focus away from Justin and Tina.

She straightened in her lawn chair. “Last summer in Stanley Park, my friend Susannah and I—”

“Oh, let Justin finish his story,” Tina interrupted. “We’ll have time for yours later.” She wiggled her shoulders, and her breasts bounced.

Justin’s nostrils flared. “In a minute. I need a refill. Anyone else?”

Kate and Nate nodded like bobblehead dolls.

Prying Tina’s fingertips off his arm, Justin stood and collected the empty glasses.
